An important petition was submitted to the Senate in the Netherlands. It calls for an official ban on so-called LGBTQ+ 'conversion practices'.

These practices are also called 'conversion therapy'. People try to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Scientists agree: this doesn't work. Moreover, it causes serious harm.

People who undergo this 'therapy' often suffer mental health problems. Think depression, anxiety disorders, and even suicidal thoughts. Young people are especially vulnerable to these dangerous practices.

COC Netherlands, the country's largest LGBTQ+ organization, supports the petition. They have fought for legal ban for years. Many other organizations support this too.

Several other countries have already banned conversion therapy. Germany, France, and Canada are examples. The Netherlands lags behind, COC Netherlands believes.

The petition has been submitted to the Senate. Politicians must now decide whether to introduce a ban. Supporters hope for a swift decision.

Opponents of the ban claim it is a matter of religious freedom. But human rights organizations are clear: no religion may harm people.

LGBTQ+ people and their families follow the political debate closely. For many, this is not just politics. It is about their safety and wellbeing.

COC Netherlands calls on everyone to support the petition. More signatures mean stronger message to politicians. A ban is necessary to protect LGBTQ+ people.
