Republican members of the US House of Representatives have introduced a new bill. This bill is often called a nationwide 'Don't Say Gay' bill. It would limit what teachers can say about LGBTQ+ topics in schools.

The bill targets federal funding. Schools that teach LGBTQ+-affirming content could lose government money. This puts pressure on schools to avoid these topics entirely.

The proposal is similar to a law passed in Florida in 2022. That Florida law banned discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades. Critics quickly called it the 'Don't Say Gay' law. Now, Republicans want to apply similar rules across the entire country.

LGBTQ+ advocacy groups are strongly opposed to this bill. They say it would harm LGBTQ+ students. Young LGBTQ+ people already face higher risks of mental health struggles. Feeling invisible or unsupported at school makes things worse.

Supporters of the bill argue that parents should decide what children learn. They say topics related to gender and sexuality are not appropriate for schools. They believe federal money should not support what they call 'inappropriate content'.

Critics disagree strongly. Teachers and education experts warn the bill would silence important conversations. It could prevent students from learning about historical LGBTQ+ figures and events. It could also stop schools from creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth.

LGBTQ+ organizations like GLSEN, which focuses on school safety, have spoken out. They say every student deserves to feel safe and included. Removing LGBTQ+ topics from schools sends a harmful message to queer students.

The bill still needs to pass through Congress. It faces strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers. However, its introduction signals a continued push by conservatives to restrict LGBTQ+ visibility in public education.

This legislation is part of a broader wave of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the United States. Hundreds of similar bills have been introduced in state legislatures in recent years. LGBTQ+ rights groups say they will continue to fight against these measures.
