The First Court of Appeal in Puerto Rico handles a case about non-binary person recognition. This is an important step in the lawsuit about the 'X' on identity documents.

In Puerto Rico, people currently choose between man or woman on official papers. Non-binary persons cannot fully recognize themselves in these two options. They want a third option: the letter X as gender marker.

The First Court of Appeal now examines if the government must allow this option. The case concerns constitutional rights and whether people can determine their identification on official documents.

Puerto Rico follows the example of other countries and American states. Those already provide X markers for longer. For non-binary persons, this can be an important step toward more recognition and equality.

The court's decision is expected soon. This will greatly influence how Puerto Rico handles gender identity on official documents.
