American coffee chain Philz Coffee decided to remove rainbow flags from stores. This decision causes strong criticism from customers and employees.

Philz Coffee has locations in California and Chicago. Many stores had hung Pride flags. But early this month staff received orders to remove them. Director Mahesh Sadarangani said: "We work on more unity in all stores. That's why we remove different flags and decorations. This is about how our stores look, not who we are."

The decision comes at a bad time. On Change.org petition site, over 6,750 people signed against removal. Philz Coffee baristas say employees and customers feel unsupported now. The petition states: "Rainbow flags mean much to us. They show everyone is welcome here. We ask the company to reverse this decision."

Philz Coffee has not responded to requests for comment. This incident follows similar situations in other American cities. Boston University earlier removed rainbow flags after criticism. Idaho tried to ban Pride flags.
