The Minneapolis City Council has voted to end a long-standing ban on adult bathhouses. The council voted 9 to 2 in favour of repealing the ban. The vote took place on 25 June.

The ban was first introduced in 1988. At that time, the AIDS crisis was at its peak. City officials believed that closing bathhouses would help slow the spread of HIV. All three adult bathhouses in Minneapolis were shut down at that time.

Now, 38 years later, the city has changed its mind. Many LGBTQ+ advocates say the ban was never fair. They argue that bathhouses are important spaces for the gay community. These venues offer a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ people.

Health experts today take a different view on HIV prevention. Modern medicine has made great progress. Treatments like PrEP can greatly reduce the risk of HIV infection. Many people say the old ban was based on fear, not science.

LGBTQ+ rights groups celebrated the decision. They called it a major step forward for the community. For many, adult bathhouses are more than just sexual spaces. They are also social spaces with a deep history in gay culture.

The repeal of the ban is seen as a win for LGBTQ+ rights in Minneapolis. It shows how attitudes toward the community have changed over the decades. What was once seen as a public health measure is now viewed by many as discrimination.

The timing of the vote is also meaningful. It took place on 25 June, just days before Pride Month comes to a close. This made the decision feel even more symbolic for local LGBTQ+ residents.

Minneapolis joins other major cities that have already allowed adult bathhouses to operate. City officials say they will work with health organisations to ensure safe practices. The goal is to protect public health while also respecting LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms.
