Left Party: Government does nothing for families with two mothers
Germany's Justice Minister promised a new law for families with two mothers months ago. So far, nothing has happened.
Many German families have been waiting long for important legal changes. It concerns families with two mothers. Currently, these mothers must officially adopt their own child. That is complicated and painful.
Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig from the SPD promised a solution months ago. She wants to abolish the so-called adoption requirement. But no new law has been introduced yet. Nothing has happened at all.
Maik Brückner, a parliament member from Die Linke, asked the government questions about this. He wanted to know when the law finally arrives. The answer he received was vague and unclear. The government gave no concrete date or plan.
Brückner is angry about this situation. He believes the government does not take rainbow families' rights seriously. Two-mother families live in legal uncertainty for years. This has major consequences for children and parents.
In Germany, the rules are currently like this: when a woman has a child via a donor, only she is legally the mother. Her female partner has no automatic rights to the child. She must adopt the child to become a legal parent too. This process costs much time, money and energy.
Other European countries have already solved this problem. In the Netherlands and Belgium, the rules were adjusted much earlier. There, the mother's female partner is automatically recognized as a parent.
Critics say Germany lags behind on LGBTQ+ rights. Minister Hubig's promise raises hope, but without action, it remains words. Families with two mothers deserve clarity and equal rights.
Die Linke continues to pressure the government. Brückner wants quick action to come. He says: children in these families cannot keep waiting. Their families are as valuable as other families.
