Ghana's parliament passed an anti-LGBT law on Friday, May 29, 2025. The vote took place in Accra, the country's capital.

This law had already been voted on in 2024. However, the president did not sign it in time. It became invalid at the end of the legislative term.

Lawmakers decided to vote on this law a second time. They restarted the legislative process from the beginning.

This new law is very harsh toward LGBT+ people. It increases penalties for same-sex relationships. It also criminalizes support for LGBTQ+ rights.

Human rights defenders are very concerned. They fear this law endangers many people in Ghana. International organizations have already criticized the text.

Ghana would join other African countries with similar laws. These laws are often condemned by the United Nations and European Union.

The law still needs the president's signature to take effect. The international community is watching closely. Diplomatic pressure could be applied to Accra in coming weeks.

LGBT+ people in Ghana already live in difficult circumstances. Discrimination and violence are common. This new law may worsen their daily situation further.

Local LGBTQ+ activists are calling for resistance. Some have already left the country fearing retaliation. The international community must support affected people in Ghana.
