Emmanuel Macron proposed François-Noël Buffet as the new Rights Defender. Parliament has validated this nomination.

But Buffet is not unknown in LGBT+ debates. This right-wing senator voted against same-sex marriage in 2013. He also opposed expanding fertility treatment to female couples.

The Rights Defender is a very important institution. Its role is protecting everyone's rights. It must defend citizens against discrimination. This includes discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

LGBT+ associations expressed their concerns. They question whether this choice makes sense. How can an opponent of LGBT+ rights defend those same rights?

The National Assembly and Senate still approved the nomination. This vote shocked many activists. Some elected officials publicly denounced the decision.

For associations, this choice sends a bad message. It shows little consideration for LGBT+ people's rights. These rights remain fragile in France today.

The LGBT+ community remains mobilized. It will closely monitor Buffet's actions. It will ensure rights are properly protected. Any discrimination must be reported and challenged.

This nomination reopens an important debate. Can someone who fought rights defend them? The question remains open and very sensitive.
