It was 25 years ago that Netherlands took an important step. On April 1, 2001, the country opened marriage for everyone first worldwide. Same-sex couples could finally marry like their heterosexual friends and family. A milestone celebrated this year.

That decision was quite progressive back then. Netherlands led many other countries. Today, more than 30 countries have introduced equal marriage. Yet Netherlands remains a pioneer for equal rights. The law helped so many couples make their love official.

The organization COC marks this anniversary. The moment gives reason to look back at achievements. Many gay and lesbian people married and made their dream come true. At the same time, much work remains unfinished. Discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ people still happen. But these 25 years show that change is possible.

Do you want to celebrate this moment? Many cities organize activities and events. Check local organization websites for more information. Of course you can pause and think: how beautiful that love is equal now.
