The Religious Society of Friends, known as Quakers, has a long history. They have supported LGBTQ+ people for more than 63 years. This makes them one of the earliest religious groups to do so.

Quakers were different from the start. They believed in equality for all people. This included gay and lesbian people at a time when few others did. In the 1960s, being gay was still illegal in many places. Speaking up for gay dignity was very brave.

In 1963, British Quakers published an important document. It was called 'Towards a Quaker View of Sex.' This text was groundbreaking. It said that same-sex love could be good and healthy. This was a radical idea at the time. Most churches strongly opposed homosexuality.

The Quaker approach was based on a simple belief. They believed that there is 'something of God' in every person. This means every person deserves respect and dignity. Sexual orientation does not change that.

Over the decades, Quakers kept moving forward. They welcomed LGBTQ+ members into their communities. They also allowed same-sex couples to marry in their meetinghouses. This happened long before many governments recognized same-sex marriage.

Quakers also became political advocates. They lobbied governments for LGBTQ+ equality. They supported anti-discrimination laws. They stood against conversion therapy. They spoke up at a time when others stayed silent.

Today, Quakers are still active in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. They support transgender rights. They push for legal protections for LGBTQ+ people worldwide. They work with other organizations to create change.

Their journey has not always been easy. Some Quaker communities had disagreements. Not everyone agreed on every issue. But the overall direction was always toward inclusion and love.

The story of the Quakers is an inspiration. It shows that religious groups can be strong allies. Faith and LGBTQ+ rights do not have to be opposites. The Quakers proved that 63 years ago. And they are still proving it today.
