Hampshire College in Massachusetts will shut down after trustees voted to end operations. The small liberal arts school was known for being very welcoming to LGBTQ+ students.

The college is located in Amherst, Massachusetts. It belongs to the Five College Consortium with four other schools nearby.

This consortium lets students take classes at different colleges. Students can also share resources across all five campuses.

Hampshire College has always been different from other schools. It does not give traditional grades to students. Instead, teachers write detailed comments about student work.

The school also lets students create their own study programs. Many LGBTQ+ students chose Hampshire because of this freedom.

Hampshire has strong policies that protect LGBTQ+ students. The college offers gender-neutral housing options. It also has support groups for LGBTQ+ students.

The school's health center provides care for transgender students. Staff members receive training about LGBTQ+ issues regularly.

Money problems led to the closure decision. The college has struggled with finances for several years. Fewer students have been enrolling each year.

The COVID-19 pandemic made things worse for small colleges. Many schools like Hampshire faced serious budget cuts.

Current students will be able to finish their degrees. The college will help them transfer to other schools if needed. Staff members will also get help finding new jobs.

The Five College Consortium will continue without Hampshire. The other four schools are Mount Holyoke, Smith, Amherst, and UMass Amherst.

LGBTQ+ advocates worry about losing Hampshire's welcoming environment. The school served as a safe space for many students. Finding similar support elsewhere may be harder for some students.
