Being Gay Is Not Enough to Keep a Friendship Going

Being gay is not always enough to build a lasting friendship. This article also explores how to be more empathetic toward self-diagnosed autistic friends.

Sometimes you meet someone new in the LGBTQ+ community. You are both gay. You think this is enough to be friends. But it is not always that simple.

Sharing your sexual identity can feel like a strong bond. It gives you something in common right away. But a good friendship needs more than that. You need to truly connect with each other. You need to enjoy each other's company.

What happens when that connection just does not feel right? Maybe the conversations feel forced. Maybe you do not share the same interests. Maybe you just do not click. This is very normal. Not every LGBTQ+ person will become your best friend.

It can feel awkward to end a new friendship. You do not want to hurt the other person. But staying in a friendship that does not work is also not fair. It is okay to slowly step back. You do not need to have a big conversation. You can simply be less available over time.

Be kind and respectful. You can still be friendly when you see each other. But it is okay to admit the friendship is not growing. Shared identity is a starting point. It is not a reason to stay in a friendship that does not feel right.

The article also talks about a second topic. A reader has autism. They are feeling frustrated. Some of their friends say they have autism too. But these friends have not been officially diagnosed. They ask for special accommodations. This makes the reader feel annoyed.

The reader wants to be more understanding. Self-diagnosis can be a real and valid experience for many people. Not everyone has access to a professional diagnosis. This can be expensive or hard to get.

At the same time, it is okay to feel frustrated sometimes. Empathy takes practice. It helps to remember that everyone is dealing with something. Try to listen and ask questions. Understanding someone's experience does not mean you have to agree with everything.

Both topics remind us that relationships are complex. Identity is just one small part of who we are.
